Meeting Notes for Rebel Class Nationals 2007
Planning meeting # 2 . (If I left
anything out, please let me know)
The second
meeting of the Fleet 21 regatta committee was held on
July 28 at 7 PM to focus on
planning the Rebel Class National
Regatta in 2007.
Committee chairs for Race, Registration,
Logistics, Weight & Measure and
Juniors were in
attendance. Much of the structure surrounding the regatta planning
was fleshed out, and input from many sources about previous regatta experiences
were shared.
First order of business: Our bid was
accepted by the Rebel Class. We are officially locked in to our July
14, 2007 start!
An informal poll was taken at Cold Water Lake, and we
can expect 14 to 16 of the boats from the Cold Water Lake Regatta to
attend. This means that with local participation, we can expect between 20
and 30 boats for this regatta.
Allan Vorel is our focal point for all
questions/help from the National Race Committee. He can be reached
directly at apv5000@netscape.net or you can talk to me and I
will relay the information to him. (Allan is now CC'ed on these minutes as well
as John Hudak who ran the Cold Water Lake
Regatta)
The lessons learned from
the Cold Water Lake regatta were discussed. The basic takeaway
from this discussion was that we needed to improve communication from the
various mooring/docking sites to insure that everyone gets to the starting
line in a timely manner. George Vurno suggested that we institute a cannon
blast 45 minutes before the start of the race so that everyone has an audible
signal in addition to contact via Marine Radio (Channel 10). Bill Selick
pointed out that everyone will be moving in the same direction towards the
starting line since many of our boats start at South Shore and move northward to
the starting line, and the visiting boats who will be the closest to the
starting line will see the progression up the
lake.
Jack Schuhardt
relayed comments from Rick Burgess that the Star Fleet always kept their
guests moored close to the boathouse and ran tenders between the boats and the
shore. The general consensus in the room was that we should attempt to
keep the guests as close to the boathouse as possible. Due to the
high number of abandoned docks near the boathouse, mooring might not be
necessary. Dennis Moeller pointed out that there are 6 docks available
adjacent to his property and that many more should be available for that
week. Bill Selick counted over 20 docks which were empty from his property
to the north end of the Awosting community. OPEN ITEM: Find out how
many docks will be available for the regatta week next
year.
Rose talked to the
Awosting community and they are highly
enthusiastic in supporting us through this regatta. We have
access to the Inn as necessary, and full access to the boathouse for the
duration. They have insured us that no swim meets will be scheduled during
this time period, and we have access to the ramp for launching boats as well as
parking trailers on the back road to the
field.
As stated at the last meeting, we have
defined the committee
leaders. There is ample support from this core group, but we would love to
have the rest of the fleet (and their crew and spouses) participate wherever and
whenever they can. Please don't
be shy, and contact the committee chairs directly to get involved. You
can participate as little or as much as you
want.
Bill Selick suggested that we create a web site to keep track of all our
progress and act as a repository for forms. The site has been
created. It is called:
Race
Committee: Rose Steele (Chair), Dan Murphy, Dennis Moeller
- Race Committee Boat
has been secured. Bruce Horton has volunteered his pontoon boat, and
tentatively volunteered to drive as well
- Dennis Moeller will drive his boat as the
crash boat
- Action: Still need to secure crew for the crash
boat
- Action: still need to nominate the PRO for the
regatta
Food
Committee: Jim Miller (Chair),
George Vurno (Awards Dinner Only), Wendy Gallione , Rose
Steele
Food was discussed, but the committee chair (Jim
Miller) was not present due to a business emergency at home. I encourage
everyone who has ideas about food to contact Jim directly so he can begin to get
this organized. So far, we have a vague idea of how we will handle food
for this regatta. Here are the extremely tentative
plans:
- Sunday dinner will be a pot luck affair held at the
boathouse or inn depending on the weather. Fleet members will be asked
to prepare some sort of dish.
- Monday dinner will be hosted at the Selick's
house (probably a lasagna dinner)
- Tuesday will be the Juniors Night Out, and seniors
will be on their own
- Wednesday dinner will be a steak dinner hosted by the
Schuhardts
- Thursday is the awards dinner at Le Bistro
II. George Vurno has already begun organizing
this.
- Lunch is still up in the air. This needs more
discussion
- The Beermeister for the regatta will be Jack
Roe. He will insure that the kegs are transported to/from the boathouse
and locked up when we are not actively using
them.
Weighing and
Measuring: Bob Zimmer (Chair), Dennis Moeller, Dan Murphy
- Bill
Selick informed the Weighing & Measuring Committee that the Sail Measuring
Jig will be shipped out by the end of this season so that we will have ample
time to measure our fleet's sails prior to the regatta. Also, the sail
stamping kit will be mailed out.
- Action:
- Find a suitable tree and create a sling for
weighing boats if necessary... Backup plan: sail boat to
Schuhardt or Selick docks and use their
lifts
- Secure Sail Jig and instructions from
Cold Water Lake (John Hudak) Jig should be mailed to Bob Zimmer rzimmer@geovation.com. John
Hudak, please arrange shipping with
Bob.
Logistics: Jack Schuhardt, Jeff Schuhardt, Dan Murphy
- Jack submitted the initial lodging list to the
team. It looks extremely comprehensive and includes most budget rooms in
the area. It was suggested that we add some high-end Bed and Breakfast
rooms as well. Action: Dan Murphy to dig up this info.
Action: Jack, please send Bill Selick the list so he can post it on the
new regatta web site.
- logistics committee will receive signage from
Clearwater Lake suitable for posting on the roads to guide guests to the
regatta
- Actions:
- Prepare 1st article for the Rebel Rabble which will
be a marketing letter on the virtues of sailing on Greenwod Lake:
Rough Draft Sept 15
- Secure unused dock space near boathouse for the
duration of the regatta... verify that docks that are available are
servicable in the Spring
- Make signs and maps for docks so guests can find
them
- Come up with plan for getting boats which are done
with registration, weighing and measuring from trailers to Awosting beach,
launched, to their docks, and send the empty trailers up to the Awosting
field.
- Find a place for the trailers and boats after the
regatta for those who want to remain in the NY area for a few days for
sightseeing
Registration:
Rose Steele (Chair), Wendy Gallione, Dennis Moeller, Chris Hill
Raffle: Gail
Bado (Chair), Dan Murphy, Joan Reichenbach, Rose Steele
Juniors: Jean
Zimmer
- 2-4 boats are expected to participate in the Junior
Regatta from out of state.
- Action: encourage participation and facilitate
fielding a boat from the home fleet
Bill Selick, Jack Schuhardt, and George
Vurno volunteered their homes for use one night each, and the food
planning committee will work with these homeowners to figure out how best to
utilize their offers (ie: dinner vs cocktail party, etc). Several people
on the committee also volunteered to allow one of our guests stay in their homes
to defray the traveling costs. It would be helpful if we could get a list
of all the space available, and the names of people who would be willing to take
in guests. This is not mandatory as most of our guests would prefer hotels
anyway, but it would be a nice option for those for whom it would be a burden to
pay for a hotel in addition to all the other costs of
travel.
It was agreed
that the next meeting will tentatively be held at 56 Board Road (Bill's house)
on Friday, Sept 15 at 7 PM. Please note that this committee and the
meetings are not restricted to "Captains Only". Crew, Spouses, social
members and friends are more than welcome.
