Light airs greeted us for what was officially race #3 after Monday's races 1 and 2 were cancelled.

Our course was a twice around a triangle starting with half a beat into an ENE wind along the eastern shore, followed by a reach (above) to the gybe mark off the western shore, a second reach to the leeward mark off the east shore near the south end of Greenwood Lake, a full beat, two more reaches plus a final half beat to the finish (see below also). - click here for full-size pic

For the first race, we sailed Course #3 clockwise (buoys to port).

Dan and I began the first reach with 5 or 6 boats ahead of us, including Daniel and Brennen Leon (4119), Al and Karel Vorel in their distinctive yellow boat, and Dan's hosts, George Vurno and Joan Reichenbach (4173).

...

The second reach was much broader and Dan and I opted to sail low, more or less along the rhumb line to the leeward mark.

With our combined 500 pounds of crew weight, it was hard to judge whether the boats sailing higher were passing us due to better wind or far less weight in the boat. We did get to do some good speed testing with ...  - click here for full-size pic

In the end, we hung in there quite well with all the leaders except ... - click here for full-size pic

... Dave Nickels and flyweight, Ethan Oslund, who had gone high early and were now pulling into a solid lead along the east shore.

In strengthening winds, we had a good battle with George and Joan (4173) up the second beat. Other boats from l to r: Paul and David Bryan, Phil and Mindy Faulkner, Robert Zimmer with son, Josh, and the Vorels. - click here for full-size pic

The top 10 in the first race (race 3, officially): Dave Nickels and crew, Ethan Oslund, who was worth his lack of weight in gold, made their move on the final reach, which was really a dead run. They passed Robert Krahulik with Steve Craver whom they then held off until the finish. Mark and Peggy Quiniff completed a fine comeback by taking 3rd ahead of Al and Karel Vorel as both of these teams had their best finish of the series. 5th place went to Jim Quiniff and Mike Stoodley over Bob and Josh Zimmer. After losing a lot of boats on the final free leg where their 500 lbs. of crew weight seemed to slow them appreciably, Dan Hockenberry and his Canadian import, Uncle Al (Al Schonborn), picked off some nice shifts and puffs on the final beat and were well pleased with their 7th place, just ahead of Phil Faulkner with his daughter, Mindy. After being in the top five early, George Vurno and Joan Reichenbach fell back to a disappointing 9th, while the Clark Lake duo of Neil Robb with Nick Tanis completed the top ten.
